The oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria is currently mired in a major insurgency by MEND militants attacking oil multinationals, oil installations and government security forces. On the face of it, the MEND insurgency appears to be a classic example of the “resource curse” thesis that seeks to establish strong connections between natural resource abundance, the paradox of plenty and violent conflict in third world countries.
